"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. Charles Dickens’ lines in his well-read novel A Tale of Two Cities still rings true in our modern era driven by technology and information."

Advances in technology have transformed the way we do business and created a whole new business landscape not bound by physical or geographical boundaries. Companies are leveraging the Internet to expand their frontiers and business, taking them to places once deemed difficult to reach. Email and instant messaging enable almost instantaneous com­munication to anywhere in the world in mere seconds. The Internet plus corporate networks offer a plethora of information that empowers today’s management and mobile professionals to make better decisions.

All these developments point to this period being the best of times and the age of wisdom. But is it really true?

Along with technological advances come new threats such as cyber crimes, virus attacks and denial of service. On top of these, there are also risks of system malfunc­tions and failures. The flip side of the ability to share infor­mation easily is the risk of losing information that should not be shared through theft or hacking.

So, the best of times can also be the worst of times, and the age of wisdom can also be considered to be the age of foolishness. But, you can seize the opportunities presented by the best and overcome the threats of the worst by taking the right security measures and cultivat­ing a healthy security culture.
